What owners report
Short excerpts of NHTSA complaints in the original wording. These are owner statements not verified by NHTSA; personal data removed.
On July 21, 2026, a catastrophic safety defect occurred involving sudden, unprompted vehicle acceleration and a complete loss of braking capability. While operating the vehicle in reverse, it experienced a sudden, violent, and uncommanded surge in acceleration.
The steering wheel was also unresponsive during the unexpected acceleration. After the crash, the car shut itself down and would not restart. The crash caused injury to my neck, and it was a miracle that no one was behind me at the normally very busy parking lot.
Without warning, the vehicle began jerking violently and decelerated to a stop in a live traffic lane, displaying a "Drive System Fault" message. Throughout the event, the vehicle would not respond to accelerator or brake input. The vehicle came to rest in a moving lane of traffic.
While operating the vehicle, I experienced a sudden and unexpected loss of propulsion accompanied by a Drive System Failure warning. An associated fault message was also displayed. The vehicle became immediately undrivable and required towing. This matter is not being raised as a routine service concern.
4th issue is that Lucid just sent out an email blast for customers have an option to purchase a hardware upgrade for future enhancements and faster response on screen animations, this is completely insane!
The recent software update v2.5.0 has been very unstable. The screens would often black out every 30 seconds and calls get cut off. But the biggest problem was it resetting profile while driving on the highway! Theres no way to fix it and we had to pull over on the side to switch profiles again to fix the seat.
I was driving on a residential road and the car signaled it had an error and the engine turned off immediately. I was left in the road and couldn’t move. After an hour the electric died. No hazards. I was put in a very dangerous situation for me and passerby’s.
Car lost power and shut down in the middle of the road. Very dangerous, almost got hit. I was able to get the car to the side of the road. The vehicle was not driveable. Call Lucid customer care and they towed the vehicle to the service center. No loaner was provided to me.

What to check before buying
- Powertrain. Shift quality under load, harsh shifts, transmission codes, CV joints.
- Electrical system. Scan all modules, test the battery and alternator, inspect connectors near the impact zone.
- Service brakes. Pedal feel, ABS operation, leaks, discs and hoses.
- Forward collision avoidance. Radar and camera: calibration after bumper or windshield replacement.
