What owners report
Short excerpts of NHTSA complaints in the original wording. These are owner statements not verified by NHTSA; personal data removed.
The rearview camera and infotainment display intermittently fail. When the vehicle is shifted into reverse, the infotainment screen goes black or freezes, disabling the rearview camera image. The vehicle must be stopped and the system manually rebooted before rear visibility is restored.
During the crash, the driver steering-wheel airbag did not deploy. Based on the severity of the impact and damage, airbag deployment would normally be expected. There were no airbag warning lights or alerts prior to the crash that I am aware of. No injuries requiring hospital care occurred.
The contact stated that he was dropping his daughter off at school, as he shifted into reverse (R) to exit a parking space he observed that the rear view camera image had "flashed" and then the screen went black.
Though we had not experienced any problems with the backup camera on our 2024 Volkswagen Atlas, on September 9, 2026 we brought our vehicle into our local Volkswagen dealer to address NHTSA 26V473 Safety Recall 91TV Rearview Camera Software. As of today, October 15, 2026 this dealer still has our vehicle.
The contact stated that while driving from a complete stop, an overheating message was displayed, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the vehicle entered LIMP Mode and failed to exceed 3 MPH. The contact was able to pull into a parking lot at a slow speed and became aware of an abnormal burning odor.
On October 6, 2026, at approximately 28,819 miles, warning lights appeared again and the myVW application reported under Engine/Powertrain: "Error: Drive system. Please service vehicle." A dashboard photograph shows the warning while the speed display reads 55 mph.
The infotainment system continues to “glitch” with the faded screen and the hot pink/purple lines that go across the screen. This was upon starting my car, I hadn’t even put it into drive. It took over 3 minutes of trying to restart the system to reset it- which I finally gave up and started to drive away.
The dealer inspection showed the coolant system as OK and did not identify or repair a coolant leak or replace any cooling-system components. My safety concern is the sudden, severe loss of propulsion/acceleration in normal traffic.
