Identify the configuration first
This article concerns the US CX-5 family redesigned for MY2017. IIHS lists MY2017–2025 applicability for the small-overlap frontal tests. That defines this article’s scope, not the worldwide end of model production. First-registration year does not replace model year and factory identification.

For the damage record, retain the VIN in the private inspection file, market, build date, equipment actually installed and photograph dates. Keep pre-disassembly and post-repair images separate. A bumper replacement on an invoice establishes neither impact direction nor the condition of components behind it.
Front bumper: sensor position matters
Mazda’s US MY2025 manual warns that front accident damage may have changed the front radar’s position. The manufacturer calls for stopping use of the relevant system and having an inspection. Mazda also directs repairs, replacement or paintwork near the radar to its service network for checking. This does not mean that every vehicle with a removed bumper has a failed radar.

Separate three findings: damaged outer cover, damaged mounting and confirmed sensor-position deviation. Until the assembly is opened, the latter two remain unknown. Inspect the reverse side and mounts using the procedure for the installed version, rather than diagnosing from the width of one photographed gap.
A radar message does not always establish an impact
The same manual lists dirt or ice on the emblem, weather conditions and low battery power among limitations. A temporary blocked-radar message under certain driving conditions is not, by itself, evidence of a fault. Windshield cracks in the front camera’s viewing area have separate inspection and glass-replacement requirements.

Record the exact message, circumstances, condition of the surface ahead of the sensor and diagnostic findings. Cleaning can help distinguish contamination from a persistent problem, but a cleared message does not confirm correct geometry after body repair. Tolerances, calibration method and bracket suitability come from current repair documentation.
NHTSA evidence: a separate reason for power loss
In report 19V-497 dated June 27, 2019, Mazda described a control problem during transition from cylinder deactivation to all-cylinder operation on certain MY2018–2019 CX-5 vehicles. Under the stated conditions, an intake-valve rocker arm could become displaced, potentially causing misfire, power loss or an engine stall. The campaign provides a PCM software correction. This documented mechanism must be considered separately from collision consequences.

A model recall does not determine the cause of an individual CX-5’s symptoms. Eligibility and completed work require a VIN check. This report revision marks the estimated defect percentage NR; we derive no numerical failure probability from it.

What the crash research shows
IIHS publishes separate driver- and passenger-side frontal tests: VTN1706 for a CX-5 Touring 4wd and VTP1719 for a CX-5 Sport 4wd, both MY2017. The page expressly identifies Mazda as the test executor and IIHS as the ratings body. Cite the particular test and its origin rather than calling every result an independent test performed by IIHS.

Deformation measurements in a controlled test explain the areas researchers examined. They do not assign hidden deformation to another vehicle. A completed repair account needs that vehicle’s body measurements, observed defects, performed operations and post-assembly test results.
Applicability to the individual vehicle
- Radar/FSC details are supported for US MY2025 only; they do not apply automatically to every MY2017–2025 trim.
- No VIN-specific geometry, hidden-damage probability, repair cost or completed repair outcome is established.
- Held source SA-013/23 has an explicit reuse hold and is excluded from this article.
