What owners report
Short excerpts of NHTSA complaints in the original wording. These are owner statements not verified by NHTSA; personal data removed.
Plastic gas tank has expanded. Likely due to ethanol in fuel causing water absorption in plastic. Tank is very difficult to install after removal. Stress on tank because of improper fit could cause cracks and leaks.
Fuel tank expanded and now seat doesn't snap onto back bracket.also paint bubbled on surface of tank.
Fuel tank was removed from motorcycle to install a new throttle cable. When fuel tank was reinstalled, the mounting holes for the fuel tank no longer lined up, the fuel tank didn't fit between the frame rails and to mount the fuel tank a considerable amount of pressure needed to be applied to force the mounting holes…
With repeated ethanol use all plastic tracks swell and could possibly fracture at the mounts resulting in fire, injury and/or death.
Plastic gas tank is starting to deform, I believe due to ethanol in the gas. I'm worried it will be come a safety issue and potentially cause sealing surfaces to warp and leak.
The plastic fuel tank on my bike is swelling visibly. On line others on the triumph forum are also complaining of this. Probably due to ethanol in the fuel. I am concerned the tank will swell until rupture and them possibly a fire.
