What owners report
Short excerpts of NHTSA complaints in the original wording. These are owner statements not verified by NHTSA; personal data removed.
I was traveling at >30 mph on paved surface road. I had just made a left turn and was going through gears to accelerate to cruising speed. A dog entered the roadway and I applied both brakes to slow down.
Rear axle hub broke off while driving approximately 5 to 10 mph, causing the motorcycle to hit the rear end of another vehicle.
Final drive flaw caused final drive oil sprayed onto rear tire and under fender which caused a safety hazard. I am not sure of the exact moment it happened, however it was discovered after riding about 30 miles, and then parking the bike.
On these model the shaft on the final-drive going into the rear differential is not oiled nor has enough grease to last over 10k miles. I have had this bike serviced at every service interval and greasing the splines is not in the service.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 yamaha xvs650. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 25 mph, the front end of the vehicle became fractured. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the front end suspension needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired.
The driveshaft stripped while coming to a stop. A defect in design. Water rusted the driveshaft.
