Body style changes the repair scheme
Honda Body Repair News for the 2016 Civic series provides separate two-, four- and five-door diagrams. The description of 1500 MPa rear structural members expressly concerns the four-door version. It does not authorize one rear-body scheme for every Civic with a similar registration year.
The bulletin’s repair requirements are verified here for MY2016 only. A July 2019 document revision does not establish MY2019 applicability. IIHS MY2017–2021 years concern crash-test ratings, not permission to use the same repair procedure.

Before damage assessment, identify body style, model year and the component actually damaged. Rear frame rail should be refined by side, area and the documented component name. An outer-panel dent and inner structural deformation are different observations requiring separate confirmation.
Sedan rear structure: measurement and replacement
For the four-door MY2016 Civic, Honda’s July 2019 revision requires the entire vehicle to be measured with a three-dimensional measuring system when rear-frame damage is suspected. A damaged member is described as a complete replacement; conventional cutting of only the rear portion is not allowed because this 1500 MPa member cannot be sectioned. The full procedure is in the body repair manual, not this overview bulletin.
Repair-scope findings therefore need the opened area and measuring points. A visible floor fold, evidence of an earlier joint or a changed trunk opening calls for specific measurement. These signs alone supply neither numerical displacement nor proof of other damaged parts.
Front impact follows a separate branch
The MY2016 document also describes a lower front cross-car support made from composite material; cooling components and other assemblies attach to the front support. Honda specifies replacement when the support is damaged. This is a separate structure and decision: rear steel-member properties cannot be transferred to the front support.
For front inspection, distinguish the support, radiator mounts, heat exchangers and connected lines. A radiator replacement entry does not establish that all those other components were broken. Each component needs its own defect finding or test result.
NHTSA: a separate steering-fault mechanism
Report 18V-663 dated October 12, 2018 concerns a narrow population of certain MY2017–2018 Civic and CR-V vehicles. Honda describes an improperly secured torque-sensor magnet in the steering gearbox. Under specified conditions it could move and cause unwanted power-assist action. Scope is linked to particular manufacturing records and VINs.

For a steering complaint after wheel impact, the campaign check is only one branch. Mechanical connections, suspension, geometry and electrical diagnosis need their own results. A recall number in this article establishes neither that this assembly is faulty nor that collision caused the fault.
What the crash test adds
For the MY2016 Civic LX 4-door, IIHS publishes small-overlap test CEN1536 and passenger-compartment intrusion measurements. The page lists rating applicability MY2016–2021. This is a specific frontal test, not verification of another Civic’s rear repair, and it does not replace Honda’s structural-member requirements.

A completed assessment should retain measurements before and after work, exact replacement-assembly identification, the procedure revision and available joint photographs. An unexamined hidden component remains unknown even after exterior gaps are restored.
Applicability to the individual vehicle
- Rear-frame rules are expressly limited to the four-door body; they are not transferred to coupe or hatchback.
- HN-body16 repair statements are verified for MY2016 only. MY2017–2021 applicability requires the exact model-year BRM; IIHS rating years are not repair applicability.
- Body Repair News is a summary, not a full sectioning or welding procedure.
- The recall has narrow VIN-specific scope; it is not generation-wide steering-failure prevalence.
