Body-family and mechanism boundaries
IIHS dates the Camry redesign to MY2018 and lists MY2018–2024 applicability for the driver-side small-overlap frontal test. This defines the article’s body-family scope. A particular brake system also requires market, model year and powertrain configuration.

Brake problem after impact is too broad for assessment. Specify the symptom: visible wheel or brake damage, leakage, changed pedal effort, a warning or an established trouble code. These records are not interchangeable and should not automatically produce the same repair operations.
What NHTSA 21V-890 actually describes
Toyota’s November 17, 2021 report concerns certain MY2018–2019 Camry vehicles with a particular mechanical vacuum pump. It describes wear of the vane end-cap material. With sufficient wear, a cap could lodge between vane and housing, break and damage other pump parts. Vacuum supply to the brake booster could be lost.

The document distinguishes lost assistance from continued operation of the service brakes, while warning of greater effort and potentially reduced braking before a warning. Affected vehicles receive pump inspection and repair or replacement. The report states that US Toyota/Lexus hybrids do not use this vacuum pump; the mechanism cannot be transferred to Camry Hybrid.

Impact and service defect: separate inspections
Our inspection framework starts with mechanical traces: the actual contact, deformation or fluid loss, areas open to examination and hidden parts. After wheel impact, inspect the brake assembly, lines and surrounding components under the repair procedure. Without that examination, a rim photograph does not establish caliper or hose condition.
Loss of assistance requires its own diagnostic branch. A VIN campaign check establishes whether a known scenario may apply; it does not replace testing the vehicle. A completed recall entry confirms recorded work, not the absence of all later faults.
When both an accident and a service campaign are known, retain alternatives until testing. A symptom appearing after an event is insufficient causal proof. Attribution needs baseline records, inspection findings, installed-component identity and a documented diagnostic result.
Why recall figures are not failure probabilities
Report 21V-890 explicitly explains that including all affected vehicles with the relevant cap material does not mean each will lose assistance. Development of the condition depends on use. The estimated percentage with defect field must therefore not become a future-failure rate or a prediction for a damaged VIN.

Original testing and the completed repair record
Test VTN1710 is published for a MY2018 Camry LE. IIHS identifies Toyota as the test executor and assigns its rating from the supplied data. The same page distinguishes original and updated side-test protocols. A body rating under one protocol establishes neither brake health nor repair quality on an individual vehicle.

After work, retain the defect description, exact procedure used, system-test results and outstanding items. Missing original photographs or an untested assembly must remain explicit gaps. An invoice naming the pump does not, by itself, prove impact caused its damage.
Applicability to the individual vehicle
- The recall concerns certain US MY2018–2019 non-hybrid pump configurations, not every MY2018–2024 Camry.
- These model-level sources cannot allocate causation between collision and the pump defect.
- No VIN-specific brake fitness, road-test result or repair estimate is supplied.
