What owners report
Short excerpts of NHTSA complaints in the original wording. These are owner statements not verified by NHTSA; personal data removed.
While driving 4 mph and 65 mph, the vehicle violently accelerated on its own. As a result, the contact's vehicle crashed into another vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed. There were no injuries.
Although I slammed on my brakes and pressed them as hard as possible, my 2017 hyundai ionic hybrid car did not stop, its airbags did not deploy, the seat belt did not lock leaving enough slack that my chin and chest slammed into steering wheel as I ran into rear of the stopped suv causing him to run into suv in front…
I accidentally backed into a concrete barrier pulling out of a parking spot. I put the car in drive, intended to pull back into my spot, took my foot off the brake and the car accelerated so quickly that I crashed into a ford truck 2-3' in front of me.
In a parking lot. Was shifting from reverse to drive at a full stop with foot on the brake. When I shifted vehicle into drive, with foot on brake, engine suddenly revved and car accelerated, moving forward at high speed, unable to be controlled or stopped. Collision into brick building occurred.
After the Dealership, Michigan City Hyundai (MCH), performed part of the needed repairs, I became aware of what could/would have been a fire hazard (as evidenced by brownish/black heat spots, on the metal cover of the hybrid battery, under the rear seat.
Instantly, the car's check engine light and check EV battery light came on, and I realized I could no longer accelerate. I immediately pulled off to a safe shoulder and turned the car off and then back on. The car would not move. I exited the vehicle and THANKFULLY left my car door open.
The vehicle lost propulsion and threw a severe Hybrid Warning Light on the dashboard. This represents a complete failure of a mandated safety recall remedy, introducing an active electrical short circuit and a severe vehicle fire hazard.
The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start with several unknown warning lights illuminated. Additionally, the message "Starting Engine to Avoid Battery Discharge" was displayed.
