Hidden risks of a used car: what the numbers show, not the checklists

VinWind research: how many sellers stay silent about the US, what breaks behind an impact, which recalls are open and how courts assess the loss. Ukrainian figures with sources.

There are hundreds of identical “what to check when buying” checklists online. We took another route and counted how often each hidden risk actually occurs on the real Ukrainian market. Below are five numbers from public listings, court decisions, Ministry registrations and manufacturer data, and what to do about each.

1. Sellers stay silent about the US

We analysed 46,589 public listings in Ukraine of cars after accidents with a US auction history (snapshot 22–23 October 2026). Only 32.6% mention the US or an auction. The longer ago the car was imported, the less often it is mentioned: 27.5% for cars auctioned in 2019, 37.2% for 2026.

Premium brands are the most silent: “not damaged” or “accident-free” appears in 10.5% of BMW listings and 8.8% of Mercedes listings with an accident history, against 4.2% for Toyota.

2. “Not damaged” after a front impact

Among 24,218 cars with a front impact in their history, one in twenty-two is sold as “not damaged”, “original paint” or “accident-free” (4.5%). A front impact is the most expensive for hidden components: radiators, subframe, radar, airbags.

3. What really breaks behind an impact

Sellers who list the repair themselves name components invisible from outside in 55% of cases: engine, gearbox, suspension, airbags, frame (644 of 1,169 descriptions). The breakdown by component and impact zone is in our research Hidden car damage.

4. Open recalls travel with the car

A car from a US auction never visits a dealer, so the factory campaign often stays open. Examples from our news: 2020–2022 Ford Escape with an inverted rearview image, 35% fixed in the US; 2013–2018 Ford Fusion brake hoses, 39%; a new Ford camera campaign on 1.45 million cars, 1.3% in a year. How to check a VIN: Recalls and complaints.

5. Scale: this is not rare

According to the State Customs Service of Ukraine, 73,200 passenger cars were imported from the US in the first half of 2026, 43% of all imports. A US history is possible even for a “European” model. More in our news.

If the risk materialises after purchase

In a sample of 12,902 court decisions on accident damage from 2024–2026, an expert report is mentioned in one in three, and a wear deduction, abolished for motor liability insurance, still appears in one 2026 decision in six. Keep inspection and repair documents: they decide the dispute. See The insurer paid too little.

What to do before buying

  • Check the VIN for a US auction history even when the seller does not mention it.
  • If the history shows a front impact and the listing says “not damaged”, ask for a workshop inspection with a paint gauge and diagnostics.
  • Ask what exactly was replaced and compare it with the typical hidden components for that impact zone.
  • Check the VIN against manufacturer campaigns and plan the open ones.
  • Keep photos, reports and receipts: you will need them if a dispute arises.
