There was no warning light illuminated prior to the crash. There were no injuries sustained. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard. A Police report was filed. The dealer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 19,000.
No warning lights, messages, or audible alerts appeared before, during, or after the incident. The automatic braking/collision avoidance system also did not activate. Because the vehicle had no braking capability at the time of the incident, the occupants and nearby pedestrians were placed at risk of serious injury.
It sounded like loud grinding. As pulled forward I looked in the rear view mirror and didn't see anything in the road that may have fallen out from under my vehicle. When I pushed on the gas I was suddenly accelerating forward very quickly without my control. This was maybe one or two seconds after I heard the noise.
The air bags did not deploy upon impact. The contact's head hit the steering wheel; the contact was treated a few days later for a minor concussion by a primary care doctor. The contact's wife also suffered minor bruising and scratches due to the accident.
Door handles fail to present, and have to be opened manually. This has happened to one handle, that I have had fixed (driver door) and is now happening to another (rear passenger door). While the door handles can be opened manually, it takes two hands to open, which would be difficult to do in an emergency.
The "Engine Power Is Reduced" warning message displayed, and the vehicle lost motive power. The contact's minor child was a passenger in the vehicle when the failure occurred. An independent mechanic responded to the location.
2 of my rims have cracked the first one around 8,000 miles and the second at around 14,400 miles. I have never cracked a rim before in my life except these 2 within the last few months. I do not take it off-roading and drive on regular roads in Utah primarily.
The fuel pump quit while driving, fortunately we were not on as interstate highway. I was able to coast to the side of the road and call for tow. If this occurred on an interstate highway it could have been very dangerous. The dealer repaired the vehicle under a warranty. The fuel pump and control module were replaced.
