No airbags deployed and my drivers side seat belt failed to lock in the accident. I was injured and taken by ambulance to hospital.
Thank God for the curb and the bushes which prevented the car from surging into traffic on Rea Road. And, thank God no one was in the path of the car when the car accelerated in reverse. While driving, the tire sidewall ripped in half. I had reported this as a tire failure but Firestone (owns Bridgestone) stated that this was caused by the vehicle (Toyota Avalon). I did want to report this in case there are other incidents.
The contact stated that while driving the instrument panel, warning lights illuminated, and the hybrid system overheated. The pull over somewhere safe message was displayed. The steering wheel was stiff. The brake pedal was stiff and failed to depress.
I represent the family of a fatally injured rollaway victim. It is on their behalf I am reporting the circumstances of this incident and to strongly urge that NHTSA update the rollaway requirements specified in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 114.
The contact stated while turning into her neighbors driveway, when the vehicle began to stall and then accelerated forward. The contact lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the neighbors metal fence. The contact stated an unknown red sign warning light was illuminated. The air bags failed to deploy.
