Start with the MY2016 update
IIHS identifies MY2016 structural/restraint changes. CEN1530 used a MY2016 ILX Premium; ratings apply MY2016–2022. This article deliberately covers MY2016–2018. Earlier ILX documentation is not transferred automatically.

For front-corner damage record tire, rim, hub and visible drive components separately. An oddly angled wheel does not reveal internal separation. A part named in an estimate does not reconstruct its pre-disassembly state.
Recall mechanism: too much grease, not too little
Honda’s June 6, 2019 report 19V-424 describes excess grease on the right drive shaft, potentially preventing full set-ring engagement with the intermediate shaft. Separation could cause loss of drive; Park without the parking brake might also fail to hold the car.

Distinguish this from a general damaged-shaft entry. Torn boot, wheel impact, bent component and incomplete engagement need different evidence. Loss of movement alone cannot select one cause and exclude the others.
What returned parts were investigated for
Honda separates dimensional analysis from grease-application investigation. The examined dimensions met design requirements; the effect of excess grease during installation was reproduced. This manufacturing finding does not establish the geometry of any crashed ILX shaft.

Record separation location, accessible surfaces, checking method and whether the assembly moved before photographs. Recovery or repair may destroy the initial state and limit chronology. Two replacements after a crash do not prove two original failures.
Inspection and repair have different thresholds
The dated remedy inspects the right shaft; both shafts are replaced if the drive shaft is not fully seated on the intermediate shaft. Manufacturing records define scope. This text confirms no current VIN eligibility or completed work.

Keep campaign applicability, actual connection condition and performed operation separate. Wheel alignment does not verify shaft seating; shaft replacement does not measure body points. Match each control document to the question actually tested.
Crash testing does not measure this fault
The frontal test defines a researched body family, not the installed set ring. Without access, appropriate procedure and results the connection remains unknown. The article establishes no individual impact direction, separation cause or hidden damage.
Applicability to the individual vehicle
- Recall MY2016–2019; article deliberately MY2016–2018. Exact manufacturing/VIN scope required.
- Documented cause is excess grease affecting set-ring engagement, never insufficient lubrication.
- Manufacturer-sample dimensions do not establish collision-vehicle geometry.
