BMW 230i Coupe 2022–2023: starter, no-start and thermal damage

Internal wear and metal in the relay chamber, actual starter identification and the narrow 2 Series scope.

US 230i Coupe MY2022–2023 with specified starter; not Gran Coupe, M240i or M2 · USA. Model years covered: 2022–2023.

The inspection framework was prepared by the editorial team. Repair procedures and parts applicability depend on documentation for the specific vehicle version.

What BMW reported

26V056 dated January 30, 2026 concerns a specified starter configuration. Unexpected internal wear could impair operation and prevent engine starting. In extreme cases, a thermal event/fire during starting or engine operation is described. This is not a statement about every BMW starter.

What part examinations found

BMW dismantled returned starters and used computed tomography/bench tests. Some examined parts and bench results showed wear-generated metallic material accumulating in the electrical relay chamber. These findings cannot determine another unopened starter’s internal state.

What to check for no-start

Identify the actually installed starter and retain proper starting-system diagnosis. Ask whether accessible connections, power supply and physical heat traces were checked, beyond adding a starter to an estimate. No-start alone does not distinguish this internal defect from other system faults.

Record impact/heat traces separately. Burnt accessible wire, damaged housing and internal relay metal are not one finding. Recall presence or replacement invoice alone cannot establish thermal-event cause.

Repair and outcome verification

The remedy replaces the starter with a different design. The 2 Series row is limited to certain 230i Coupe MY2022–2023; BMW used assembly, service and supplier records. This is not M240i, M2 or four-door Gran Coupe.

Record fitted part, replacement basis and checks against the original complaint. Body year cannot identify a starter after earlier repairs. Without internal examination of the removed assembly, its failure mechanism is not confirmed.

Why no percentage is provided

The report explains the NHTSA portal’s minimum percentage entry. That field must not become an exact failure probability for a particular 230i. No individual risk is calculated or other multi-model data transferred here.

Applicability to the individual vehicle

  • Only specified 230i Coupe MY2022–2023; other 2 Series excluded.
  • No-start is not a diagnosis; portal percentage not used as personal probability.
