One model range, different front structures
IIHS dates the Escape redesign to MY2013 but separately identifies MY2017 changes: reinforcement of the driver’s door hinge pillar and modifications to the front structure. Driver-side test CEN1622 used a MY2017 Escape SE 4wd and applies to MY2017–2019. It cannot be transferred to MY2013–2016 as an unchanged structure.

A body-damage record should identify the model year and repair-scheme version, beyond the Escape name. If door gaps changed after an impact, record which gaps were measured, whether the hinge area was inspected and which body control points were checked. An uneven gap alone does not establish a replacement-parts list.
Rear corner: repair layers beside BLIS
The US MY2017 manual places BLIS sensors behind the bumper cover on both sides. Ford expressly warns against stickers and repair compound in these areas because they can impair operation. Dirt, snow and heavy rain are also listed as possible blockage causes. First confirm that the individual vehicle is equipped with BLIS.

After rear-corner repair, document the cover, the area ahead of the sensor, its mounting and wiring separately. Bumper painted does not describe the thickness or composition of layers in the radar path. A new cover does not establish that the bracket and sensor were inspected either.
The manual links Cross Traffic Alert to the same radar sensors. Blockage also limits that function. A blocked-sensor message and a system-fault message are different records; retain their exact wording rather than merging them into one damaged-radar diagnosis.

NHTSA 22V-413: a problem separate from body impact
Ford’s June 10, 2022 report describes degradation or detachment of the bushing connecting the shift cable to the transmission. For Escape it lists certain MY2013–2019 vehicles with 1.5, 1.6, 2.0 or 2.5 engines and the 6F35 transmission. The actual transmission position may then differ from the selector position, allowing unintended vehicle movement.

The stated remedy replaces the bushing and adds a protective cap. It does not justify immediately replacing the entire transmission. Individual VIN eligibility and completed campaign work must be checked separately. The recall population includes several Ford models, so its total is not Escape failure statistics.

This is an important alternative diagnostic branch after damage: clarify will not shift by checking the mechanical linkage, actual transmission state and other established defects. A symptom appearing after a crash does not prove that impact destroyed the bushing.
What the repair record should retain
Evidence for this Escape can include photographs of the opened repair area, body measurements, radar-mount findings, pre- and post-work diagnostic records and exact shift-linkage operations. If an assembly was not opened or tested, record its state as unknown.
Front structure, radar systems and transmission linkage require different procedures. A sound result for one does not establish the condition of the others. This overview organizes inspection questions; it does not replace Ford’s repair scheme or determine geometry tolerances from photographs.
Applicability to the individual vehicle
- The MY2017 BLIS manual does not establish equipment applicability or calibration for all years.
- No inference is made that collision caused the shift-cable defect.
- MY2017 structural findings are not transferred to MY2013–2016.
