Hyundai Santa Fe MY2021: water in the accessory tow harness

Rear-bumper condition, installed tow equipment and its module defect require separate checks.

US two-row Santa Fe; MY2021 only and actually installed accessory harness · USA. Model years covered: 2021–2021.

The inspection framework was prepared by the editorial team. Repair procedures and parts applicability depend on documentation for the specific vehicle version.

The model name does not establish equipment

23V-181 revised May 12, 2023 concerns an accessory harness the vehicle may have. Gas, HEV and PHEV rows have different years. This article covers MY2021 only; applicability depends chiefly on the actual harness identity and presence.

Hitch, external socket and electrical module are different components. A hook photograph identifies neither harness nor suspect module; no visible hook does not reconstruct equipment history. Inspect the vehicle.

Connector, water and circuit board

Hyundai describes water entering the harness module through a 4-pin connector, potentially shorting the PCB and causing thermal damage/fire even while parked with ignition off. This particular accessory mechanism is not a diagnosis of every Santa Fe electrical complaint.

Separate connector water/corrosion, wiring condition, housing heat traces and module test results. An examination limited to the bumper leaves those components untested.

Rear impact needs its own evidence

Record contact location and actual wiring routing. A trapped/chafed wire, broken mount and wet connector are different defects with their own location, date and method.

23V-181 alone does not prove water caused observed heat damage. Crash traces do not exclude the documented design/manufacturing scenario either. Leave the cause open without findings and tests.

Remedy starts with equipment verification

The document checks for the relevant accessory and performs the specified remedy as necessary, not universally on every Santa FeMY2021. Do not turn older interim measures into current repair instructions without campaign verification.

Record exactly what was fitted, which defect was confirmed and which tests completed. Rear electrical repair does not distinguish a tow-module intervention from other wiring work.

Which family IIHS researched

IIHS separates the two-row MY2019 redesign from earlier Santa Fe Sport. Hyundai tested a MY2019 Santa Fe SEL 4wd in VTN1808; ratings apply MY2019–2023. This frontal test examines neither accessory module nor sealing.

The article does not cover the whole generation/configuration range. Unconfirmed equipment, hidden areas and service work remain separate unknowns.

Applicability to the individual vehicle

  • Actual accessory harness presence/type unverified; no fitment from model or hitch photo.
  • MY2021 gas/HEV only; separate PHEV source years are not transferred.
  • March/May2023 population wording supplies neither a failure denominator nor current VIN status.
