Engine defines applicability here
20V-153 dated March 23, 2020 limits US scope to certain A6 MY2019–2020 2.0 TFSI mild-hybrids, code C8, built June 27, 2019–February 26, 2020. Another engine or A6 badge does not establish this component.

Identify installed assembly/powertrain before assessing heat. Earlier replacement can change equipment beyond original body configuration. Do not fill unknowns from a similar-car photograph.
Inverter covering, moisture and short circuit
The manufacturer describes cracked plastic inverter moulding inside the belt starter-generator. Moisture could enter, allowing electrolysis/shorting and smouldering/fire. This internal mechanism does not explain every darkened underhood part.

Separate housing heat traces, external wiring damage and confirmed internal defects. Closed internals are not visually examined. An engine-bay overview cannot locate the precise short origin.
Chronology does not expand market scope
Two new A5 fires during rail transport in China appear in the chronology. The US vehicle row names specified A6. That does not add every US A5 or establish identical equipment. (20V-153)

Another event’s location does not identify this car’s moisture source. Record impact contact and actual accessible electrical damage separately. Impact plus heat traces alone do not establish sequence.
Replacement needs evidence
The dated remedy replaces the starter-generator with a better moisture-protected version. It confirms no individual VIN completion or health of an already replaced unit.

Retain removed/fitted identity and test results. A generator invoice does not establish earlier fire origin. Without examination or sufficient baseline data, cause remains open.
What the frontal test researched
IIHS dates redesign to MY2019. Volkswagen/Audi tested A6 2.0T Premium quattro MY2019 in VTN1903, rating MY2019–2025. This expands neither the narrow 20V-153 population nor establishes generator sealing.
Internal condition, water path and thermal cause remain unknown until tested. A crash test cannot reconstruct individual electrical history.
Applicability to the individual vehicle
- C8 explicitly source-verified; only US MY2019–2020 2.0 TFSI mild-hybrid build cohort.
- China A5 chronology does not expand US scope or establish all-A6/48 V applicability.
- No individual fire cause, water path or current VIN completion is established.
