Body family does not identify the curtain batch
IIHS lists the US MY2017 redesign and CEN1604 applicability MY2017–2020. Equipment report 20E-066 concerns particular dates and serials, not every curtain in that Q7 range.

Vehicle year, component manufacture and previous repair date can differ. None substitutes for another. If a curtain was replaced, identify the component actually fitted.
What the supplier found
iSi’s September 10, 2020 report describes an incorrectly welded nozzle directing inflator gas into the curtain. This could prevent proper inflation. Certain inflators made May 3 and May 8, 2019 are involved; individual serial and production records were linked to vehicle VINs.

Chronology includes manufacturing tests, weld-monitoring records and physical examinations. Those support batch investigation. Intact-looking trim cannot replace them or establish that installed equipment belongs to the population.

Preserve the evidence sequence after impact
Retain known event circumstances, initial cabin photographs and proper restraint-system findings. A deployed curtain, damaged trim and diagnostic entry are separate observations. An absent picture does not reconstruct the event.
An undeployed airbag does not prove a production defect. Establish conditions in which deployment was expected and actual test findings. An equipment recall establishes neither deployment nor other SRS condition. No pyrotechnic-handling instructions are provided.
Part number and repair traceability
20E-066 lists left/right Q7 curtain modules but defines scope from manufacturing records. Remedy replaces affected parts with conforming ones, not every Q7 module by year or similar number.

After work, retain installed-assembly identity, tests and unknown provenance. Airbag on an invoice does not identify side, version or batch. Unconfirmed origin must not become an established defect.
What IIHS tested
CEN1604 used a MY2017 Q7 3.0T Premium Plus 4wd. Overall and structure were Good; lower-leg/foot measure Acceptable. This frontal protocol tests neither every other inflator batch nor subsequent repair quality.
Applicability to the individual vehicle
- 20E-066 is serial/process-defined equipment recall, not blanket MY2017–2020 vehicle fitment.
- No assumed deployment, expected deployment or private MY2020 case conclusion.
- No pyrotechnic removal/repair instructions or source-derived failure probability.
