Audi S4 2011–2012 3.0 TFSI: fuel smell near the rail and injectors

The documented leak, 24AP replacement scope and why concurrent thermostat work does not prove leak causation.

Historical US S4 MY2011–2012 with specified 3.0 TFSI · USA. Model years covered: 2011–2012.

The inspection framework was prepared by the editorial team. Repair procedures and parts applicability depend on documentation for the specific vehicle version.

What can leak fuel

Certain S4 3.0 TFSI have a reported leak at the fuel-rail/injector connection. Production tolerances combined with driving vibration could allow leakage. The documented sign is fuel smell from the engine bay. An ignition source could turn the leak into a fire.

Why smell alone cannot select a replacement

Proper fuel-system diagnosis must locate the leak: rail/injector connection, other accessible joints, or impact-damaged wiring and neighbouring parts. A general petrol smell entry does not identify a defective component.

15V-019 chronology says initial checks and bench analysis found no deviations; later work investigated component positions within tolerances and driving effects. One inspection without visible leakage therefore does not reproduce all conditions of the reported scenario.

What repair branch 24AP includes

The remedy replaces fuel rails and corresponding seals. The repair document separately notes concurrent thermostat or crankcase-ventilation valve updates are not repairs of this safety recall’s cause.

Distinguish the established fuel-connection defect from associated work in the estimate. A replacement list does not prove every part defective or one common cause. Request each operation’s basis and leak-check results.

If there are front-impact traces

Record accessible damage and fluid location before cleaning/dismantling. Impact contact, production tolerance and previous repair are different hypotheses, not one conclusion from smell or 24AP. If removed rails were not examined, their original condition may remain unknown.

Which S4 vehicles are covered

The S4 row in 15V-019 specifies MY2011–2012, 3.0 TFSI, April 20, 2011–March 3, 2012. The instruction’s broad 2011–2013 heading covers multiple models; it does not add S4 MY2013. Check the actual vehicle and repair criterion.

Applicability to the individual vehicle

  • Historical S4 MY2011–2012 3.0 TFSI; MY2013 from other models not transferred.
  • Smell does not locate the leak; concurrent replacements do not prove every part failed.
