Audi TT 2016–2019 quattro: how a front impact can damage the fuel tank

Documented tank/heat-shield-bracket contact, quattro versus 2WD and the 20BX protective cap.

Third-generation TT: specified US Coupe quattro/Roadster quattro MY2016–2019 · USA. Model years covered: 2016–2019.

The inspection framework was prepared by the editorial team. Repair procedures and parts applicability depend on documentation for the specific vehicle version.

The defect emerged in frontal testing

An internal FMVSS208 frontal crash test damaged the TT tank against a heat-shield bracket. Audi investigated tolerances/mountings through further tests and simulation. This documents possible tank damage in a front impact, beyond direct contact against the outer tank wall.

Why quattro matters

The bracket was a common body part but had no function on quattro. Front-wheel-drive versions use a different tank and are explicitly excluded. Certain TT Coupe quattro/Roadster quattro MY2016–2019 have separate build ranges; production changes/factory remedy already distinguish some cars.

What to inspect after front impact

Ask the technician to examine accessible tank/bracket condition, beyond front panels, under the procedure for this version. Record actual contact/deformation and leak-test results. Front damage alone does not prove this tank punctured.

Identify any discovered fluid. A stain photo distinguishes neither fuel from other fluids nor leak location. If tank was replaced/area cleaned, retain initial records and identify surfaces no longer examinable.

Remedy versus separate tank repair

20BX fits a protective cap on the heat-shield bracket. This addresses the described contact; it does not repair an already damaged tank. Production bracket removal cannot independently become another procedure for an older car.

Separate cap installation, tank inspection and repair of a confirmed leak. A cap does not confirm tank inspection following a later crash. A tank invoice likewise does not establish the exact damaging contact.

Conclusion limits

20V-076 explicitly names third-generation TT and specified quattro versions. Similar photos cannot determine another car’s hidden deformation. Verify current applicability and actual protection individually.

Applicability to the individual vehicle

  • Only specified Coupe/Roadster quattro; 2WD explicitly excluded.
  • Crash testing supports the mechanism, not an individual VIN’s leak or geometry.
